June 21, 2002

After a delayed start, we kicked off our summer season at the End Of School Celebration in Fort Fairfield. It was a pretty laid back place to play. After a quick soundcheck, we got all the free pizza we wanted (the first sign of a nice place). We basically wasted an hour or so until our 9pm set. We opened with Still Photography and (after a rocky start) went into Prelude. This being my first show, i thought things were going to be disastrous after this, but we pulled back together in the next few songs and were playing decently by the end of the hour. The only thing we could probably complain about was the PA and "gym acoustics", which made it hard to hear vocals, and made talking in between songs awkward (especially if people had no clue what we were saying in the first place). Oh, and i wasn't too happy with the light show. I mean, it was cool and all, but you have to realize that i was trying to use sheet music...ha.
After our set, we wasted some more time, played a little basketball, ate some more pizza, and took some 6packs of soda from the staff room. At 11, Primer from Ft. Fairfield went on stage and put on a decent show. We spent a lot of the night talking to these guys, only to find out that they're pretty cool guys. You'll probably hear more from them in the future. At this point, Gabe found a corner and slept for about 5 hours or so, while the rest of us just bummed around, tried to cool off (the first hot day of the summer and we have to load and unload Uhauls plus play a show in a busy gymnasium..), and waited until the battle of the bands.
The battle of the bands was a quick one, with each band getting 10 minutes of playing time. There were a handful of bands performing throughout the night, but i think most of them optioned out of the battle of the bands. There was an rap/acoustic soft rock group that went on earlier in the night and played again right before the botb was about to start, but i don't think they were competing. Lowfive officially went on first, repeating 2 of the best songs from the earlier set, Boys Will Be Boys, and a new song, Lie Down With Dogs. We got pretty good reception, especially from a small group of fans who relentlessly requested songs from Demolicious. Next up was Primer, who played 2 or 3 songs. They were well received, especially from a group of friends/girlfriends on the other side of the gym. Then, after a brief interlude and dance number by myself, Nathaniel Blevins performed a short acoustic set to wrap up the competition. After an audience cheering volume judging (be far the crappiest way to judge a battle of the bands) the brass chickened out and called the contest a three way tie. sure, it's a little anticlimactic, but hey... it's still 1st place.
Anyway, we were out of there by 5am. All in all, this was a nice warmup show for next weekend's trip downstate and through NH. Sorry to anybody who wanted merch, becuase we didn't have anything. except stickers, but we didn't really feel like setting up a merch booth for stickers. Hoss videotaped most of the show, but we didn't take any snapshots. we'll try to get some video stills or something up on the pics page at sometime in the near (or far) future.
