August 22nd, 2002

Not tarnishing our new streak of arriving very late to gigs, we set out today for Gouldsboro Maine a full hour later than planned. Using my normal tactics of "shortcuts" and "speeding" we managed to complete the trip in 2 hours and 45 minutes, including one "pee stop".
When we first arrived at the Java Saloon, things looked pretty bleak. The other band booked, Idiots For Hire, apparently had backed out of the deal earlier in the week. Looking just as bleak were the crowd and performance space, but we made ourselves at home, and crammed all our equipment into the small lounge area. We started our set with quite a relaxed attitude, as the gang; Misty, Autumn, Dave, Theo, Bonnie, the nefarious L'il Marty, and real life/internet cowboy Tex (as well as some other guy who came in and out a few times, but was absent for the band/audience meet and greet), rocked out.
Filling in for Sean Higgbert in the 'other' guitar player position was Primer's own Dustin Saucier, who did quite the bang-up job. I would mention that he's only been playing with us for a week, but that would shock people, and i don't want to do that. Great work was done, nonetheless, and will be done once again this coming Saturday at the Houlton show.
Tonight also marked the first performance of the new version of Sheathen, which hasn't been played (in any version) in over a year. It's still the same kooky song as before, but now it sounds cooler.
Relating well to the audience, we stepped out of routine at the request of Theo or Tex or somebody to "play something Misty knows so she can sing". Although Gabe still ended up singing the song, we played Say It Ain't So off the cuff. I think it went well, although we didn't video the show. So it all comes down to stories we tell. In which case, it was "the raddest cover ever".
Anyway, while loading up, we had the pleasure of trying out Hell's Bells Relish, a Java Saloon exclusive. Eat it. Because it is good. [insert Lowfive stamp of approval here].
