December 26th, 2003

This show kicked off our streak of performances over the winter break, and marked my first show back with the band in 3 months. We were all pretty worked up for the show, and it didn't help that we had no clue about the details until pretty much when we got to the venue. It turns out that it wasn't really too much of a "rock show," but rather a community music showcase. The first group of bands appealed to the seasoned community members and their families, playing classic rock numbers, some jazzy stuff, etc. I kind of missed most of the first few acts because...
i was in and out for most of the night trying to prepare for the show and eat McDonalds cheeseburgers. a quick glance at the setlist reminded me of how long it had been since i played with the band, and set me to figuring out how to play all the songs - most especially (my) live debut of the Impossibles cover "Stopping Sound". The band played this for the Canada show, but it was all new to me. Basically, i'd come up with a Moog part for the song and that was it. until this show, i could barely play the part without messing up. but thanks to kirsten's obsessive fanboiety, she had a copy of the demo on CD in her car, so i loaded up the CZ-1000 with 5 D-Cells and headed out to practice for a half hour or so.
I was back in time to catch the set before ours, which was performed by a singer/songwriter with an acoustic guitar. I never caught this guy's name (bless his heart), but he was pretty good. He did quite a few cover songs, but he also had some originals in the mix. This guy played his guitar upside down & left handed if you catch my drift... Good singer. Also, fiddler-generated accompaniment.
Our set was next. The oldest song we played was Atlantic Ocean, and the newest was the Stopping Sound i mentioned. We played all of the 3 new songs from the ep, and Calico. Overall i'd say it was a great set, without considering that we hadn't played as a group in 3 months, and we didn't have any time to practice before the gig. If you DO consider that stuff, i'd have to bump the show's grade up to wicked great set.
this was the first show with the Moog, and thus we will start measuring history by this date. All shows before this date will be measured backward in the BM era. What a great instrument! nice soundsystem and nice venue too. i think we might have a video tape of this floating around.... also, deprez took pics. stay tuned.
